Understanding the basic elements of art music (melody, harmony, rhythm, dynamics, tempo, texture, etc.) is an essential part of every musician's education.  The ability to manipulate these elements in creative ways can help solidify knowledge of these elements in ways that simply encountering them in repertoire cannot. Would you like to build a school guitar class with the scholastic integrity and ensemble chops of a great band or orchestra program? This clinic will focus on ways to explore culturally diverse repertoire from a foundation of music literacy and classical technique. Music educators who teach guitar but aren’t yet confident players and those who have recently been assigned or would like to begin a guitar class will find this session particularly helpful. The clinician will demonstrate and discuss effective ways to teach medium to large groups of students how to play guitar with ergonomic technique and to avoid the negative habits that often befall beginning students. He will also explore tactics for getting students to read music and play as an ensemble from the very beginning of their guitar-playing experience. Ultimately, we want students to have an engaging and enriching experience on this most accessible instrument.

This session explores the concepts of how embouchure compression, air volume, mouth/throat shape, and rolling affect intonation on the flute. Once educators know the four main influences of flute intonation, they can more readily empower their flutists with the tools to adjust their intonation based on each student’s individual tendencies. At the conclusion of this session, attendees will come away with the skills to create a "prescription" for each flute student's intonation while maintaining tonal integrity.

Over the past year, whether we have wanted to or not, we have all become far more aware of different apps that we can use with our students for enhancing music learning inside and outside of the classroom. There are literally apps for everything. While there are thousands of apps available, it is easy to get into the weeds looking for apps that are pedagogically sound, useful, cost efficient, and accessible for students from pre-K through college. This session will explore many of the APPs available to music educators using both traditional computers, tablets/iPads, Chromebooks, and smartphones. Many of the APPs are free, readily available, and can inspire your students both in and outside of the classroom!

In this session you will learn concrete tools to overcome burnout for you and your students based on the research by Dr. Amelia Nagoski, Dr. Emily Nagoski and their book, “Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle.” We cannot change the fact that we face countless stressors every day, but we can control the way we react through mindfulness and community care. Dr. Stanley Curtis, trumpet professor at Colorado State University, will discuss six different ways, or "axes," that tone can be changed on brass instruments. This session will introduce practical and efficient approaches to help your clarinet players sound better immediately, regardless of age or skill level. You will gain the tools to provide incoming band students with a successful instrument tryout experience on the clarinet, and the knowledge to set them up for success in their early years of clarinet playing. I will also discuss what judges look and listen for in honor band auditions and demonstrate methods to help students get over the break, have greater overall technical facility, and develop good tone in the altissimo register.

Whether a push from administrators, the community, or as a necessary class to fill out FTE, many secondary music educators are being handed popular music courses as part of their teaching loads. Often educators are assigned these courses with little to no curriculum support or training. This session will look at taking these classes and turning them into a robust program of study in popular music in a way that honors why students take these classes, acknowledges their limits as electives, and respects the time and energy of a secondary music educator that is already spread thin. Topics will include courses (guitar, history, and recording and songwriting), curriculum development, assessment, and recruitment and scheduling.

Many instrumental music programs turned to flexible/adaptable compositions as a tool to maintain programs while facing the many challenged of the past year associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. Fortunately, many composers responded to the needs of music organizations by composing works for flexible or adaptable instrumentation. While this music is well suited to meet the challenges of the past year’s hardships, there are many opportunities in flexible/adaptable music beyond the circumstances of the pandemic. This session will focus on how instrumental programs can use these works in a wide variety of teaching and performing situations.
