Many of the challenges outlined in Dennis Ndonga's seminal paper on eCommerce in Africa written in 2012 still exist today. African States are yet to reap the full benefits of eCommerce, as it has not penetrated the continent to the extent experienced by Western countries. The lack of adequate ICT infrastructure, lack of basic ICT knowledge, and the threat of cyber crimes have created a significant barrier to the adoption and growth of eCommerce in many African countries.
Most of these challenges can be solved with the use of modern technologies and adoption strategies, but how do micro commerce businesses access, implement and benefit from these technologies and ideas? At The Future of Commerce in Africa, we will discuss how anyone can implement some of these tools and technologies.

The future is digital, no doubt. The COVID-19 pandemic proved it. It has further pushed digitalization and digitization across all industry sectors and blockchain is considered an innovative frontrunning technology with regards to applicability and usability in these challenging times.
In the art and creative sector, there is a massive paradigm shift with the introduction of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), as the space is acquiring a large number of artists (and non-artists) hoping to capitalize on the innovation and distribution power that blockchain technology is offering. What digitization first removed from art,
blockchain is trying to bring back; reshaping the art world with viable tools for provenance, authenticity and distribution.
The NFT space is generally murky water, especially in Africa. The identified challenges would be lack of technical know-how among the key players in the art industry, an expensive gate fee into the space, policies and legal implications. These are the major areas that will be explored in the conversation with Jumoke Sanwo, Adewale Mayowa, Ade Adekola and Seun Lari-Williams.
What does the future look like for an African Creator? What and Who is NFT for? How does one (by oneself) enter and thrive in the space? Does the government have a role to play in the space? How do they deal with policies, such as taxation, in the NFT space? These and more are some of the questions we hope to adequately answer through the panel session.

The covid 19 pandemic has taken a heavy toll on Africa's economy and growth. It has simply widened the inequality gap and exacerbated seemingly perennial dire conditions of poverty, hunger and unemployment on the continent. Africa must create jobs for her millions of unemployed youth in order to stem the growing tide of discontent especially among young people. While governments have the primary responsibility to reduce poverty and create the conducive environment for enterprise to thrive and multiply and create jobs and opportunities, it is pertinent for non state actors including private sector and the social sector (especially faith communities) to play major role in addressing some of the gaps in systems and governance that would address this.
Our session will focus on Youth, Technology, Hustle and Bustle in Africa: expanding roles for Faith communities in driving innovation and enterprise? Our panelists are people who have a good grounding in enterprise development, business governance, policy, technology innovation as well as in engagement with faith communities for development. They shall discuss how technology is reinventing the old concept of manna coming down from heaven by exploring the world of possibilities and opportunities waiting to be unlocked and unleashed through technology driven innovations and enterprise. How faith based NGOs are addressing stereotypes and dogma to promote an economy that prioritizes gender and youth inclusion.
The panel will also explore the roles of faith NGOs in addressing the issues of capacity and integrity deficit among young people which poses a hindrance to accessing credit, jobs and leverages. We shall also explore ideas and information on how government agencies and the financial sector can help young people to initiate bankable ideas, build viable enterprise and access public and private support/accelerator initiatives.

There is a need to deliberately repurpose Africa’s narrative in the imminent metaverse era.
With Internet of Things and the digital revolution, PR is taking a very disruptive form. Being a soft power, it is driving change in crafting alternative narratives, elevating social purpose, and providing the tools to navigate a social media verse that is dominated by activism.
With the imminent metaverse paradigm, where immersive interaction is spliced by augmented reality and Artificial Intelligence, how would PR shape Africa’s perceptions in this new world of alternative reality?
Evolving technology will continue to revolutionise consumer behaviour as well as democratise how people interact with and consume media. The place of PR in the metaverse era will have to push creativity and innovations beyond the realm of today’s value creation. One of the major things that has hindered the growth of tourism in Africa is poor funding. There are many African businesses with great initiatives that could revolutionize the industry on both small and large scale, unfortunately access to funding possess a problem. To profer solutions to this problem, our panel would be discussing funding opportunities such as crowdfunding, trust funds and tourism banking for Tourism businesses.
Crowdfunding, which is the practice of funding a project by raising money from a large number of people who each contribute a relatively small amount, has become the fastest-growing trend in fundraising and it’s a predominantly useful tool in times of crisis. Our speakers, Pelu Awofeso and Ayomide Aborowa, who are tourism entrepreneurs, would be sharing how they were able to raise funds for their projects through crowdfunding. Society is continuously evolving at an exponential rate. Gen-Z (youth aged 9-24 years) face a lot of pressure that many parents didn't experience growing up. Some of these pressures stem from self-esteem issues, academic or professional career-path stress, bullying, depression, cyber addiction, and anxiety over friendships and relationships. As algorithms increasingly choose what we watch, listen to, or whose opinion we hear on social media and other digital platforms, the fundamental questions of ‘Who am I?’ ‘What do I want to do?’ ‘What do I stand for?’ ‘How can I contribute to something bigger than myself?’ are increasingly challenging to define. Parents of teens are often focused on kids’ academics, and general welfare while overlooking their health, social and emotional learning, creative endeavours, and transition to work. What used to work on the path towards ‘success,’ often gets imposed on our youth, without truly understanding the information, innovation, and pathways to the possibility that exist ahead of them.
Our Gen-Z kids on this continent are brilliant and motivated. When our youth have ideas and are ready to work for change, how do we build their mindset, resilience, self-esteem, and habits to carry them forward? How do we empower them to speak their truth, share their voice, and contribute meaningfully to this ever-changing world? We've seen where traditional paths of success and the pressure to achieve have taken over and have left many youths more lost, dazed, and confused, than ever. If we provide them 'with the best,' that can potentially lead to entitlement, inertia, and an overall lack of direction. This podcast episode will talk about how we can support Gen-Z to build the life skills necessary to deliberately decide the impact they want to make on the world around them and to lead with courage and empathy. As at Q3 2021, startups in Africa had raised $2.9Bn+ in over 515 deals according to data from Africa:The Big Deal. While most of the funding comes from investors abroad, local investors are often the ones writing cheques for early stage start-ups, usually at the pre-seed and seed stages. According to Partech, early stage companies accounted for 64% of the 359 funding rounds above $200K in 2020, representing $220M of the $1.4Bn invested in startups on the continent.
Local investors often have first hand experience of the challenges these startups are attempting to solve and are best positioned to provide advice and honest feedback to the founders in addition to early funding (usually between $25K to $100K) needed for these startups to build out their solution and acquire the early customers to validate their solution. More money in the hands of local investors would mean more early stage startups getting funding. These early bets give startups a fighting chance.

The importance of skills development in African growth cannot be overemphasized. More particularly, digital skills have been a driver of economic growth and development all over the world. While advanced economies have used their education system to champion digital skills development, African schools appear to be playing little or no active role in the development of their future workforce. For example, a report by UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) shows that several countries in Africa have no active policy or plan to implement science, technology, and innovation into the education system.
With the COVID-19 epidemic, there has been an immediate and urgent demand for new skills, notably digital skills, in order to maintain and improve education delivery in Africa. A recent report by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) in Nigeria showed that in the country’s public primary schools, more than 60% of instructors lack the digital literacy needed to work effectively in an e-learning setting.

Rationality ends Where HUNGER begins, so the saying goes. The violence and looting that followed the #EndSARS nationwide protest last year is quite instructive for Nigeria. There is hunger in the land, and there is poverty occasioned by lack of jobs, social welfare and opportunities for millions of young people in Nigeria. Agriculture will help Nigeria diversify the economy and create jobs and opportunities for the mass of unemployed youth as well as address the issues of hunger and malnutrition. Agriculture is the largest employer of labour in Africa though mostly involving smallholder engagement and characterised by low tech and inadequate investment. Climate change is an additional stressor to agriculture in Africa, thus making it imperative to promote climate smart agriculture and technology driven agricultural innovations.
This session will highlight innovative ideas and advocacy efforts to make food production and distribution sustainable, profitable and efficient. In addition, discussions will focus on the role of technology, youth engagement and government's policies and programs. The global animation industry is a multi-million dollar industry and is fast growing. We are seeing an upsurge in the demand for true authentic African stories and this has created great opportunities for us to tell our own stories ourselves through the medium of animation. While Nigeria is the creative content hub for Africa, our animation industry is still at its infancy and we have few animators.
This training is part of an effort to increase the number of animators we have on the African continent. With this training, we will familiarize trainees with Adobe After Effects which is an industry-standard software that is used for animation. The trainees will be walked through how to create and animate a simple animated character. With this, I will show the trainees that animation can be fun and rewarding. Animation is a beautiful medium for telling stories and passing information. There are great opportunities for employment and creative expression that is yet to be tapped and that is why I would like as many as possible to Animate Now.

Largely across Africa inclusivity is not a priority, often entire communities are marginalized and discriminated against based on their tribe, gender, disability, age, and economic status. Today, the world has realised the importance of inclusion in the workplace and the community at large. However, Africa is still lagging behind in inclusive practices.
