Past versions of Social Innovation solutions have been great at addressing symptomatic issues but many lack full understanding of the underlying causes of the social challenges. The real design challenge for this new generation of social innovators is to combine a deep understanding of both racial inequality and social innovation to offer a more effective strategy for solving complex problems.

TarmacTX is an Austin-based accelerator run by the global nonprofit INCO that has supported over 40 environmentally focused startups since 2016 through generous support from the 3M Foundation. This year, TarmacTX is collaborating with the City of Austin Civilian Conservation Corps (ACCC), Blue Sky Partners and DivInc, to offer the Green Workforce Accelerator, a program that supports organizations interested in building equitable pathways into jobs that create a greener and more sustainable Austin. Five organizations have been selected to design, launch and/or scale green workforce training programs that provide economic mobility for underserved communities and those most affected by COVID-19. The session will include representatives from some of these selected organizations, core team members from the Green Workforce Accelerator, and the acting Director of the ACCC. Panelists will discuss how local organizations - including startups - can strengthen the "Green Collar" sector by focusing on local environmental needs and creating equitable opportunities.
