Compliance in Cannabis Marketing: Defining the Gray Areas and Navigating Big Tech
Dr. Tristan Watkins has a varied background, with roots in academia and the cannabis industry. Tristan earned his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University, where he studied obesity, neuroinflammation, and cannabis. From there, he ventured out west and co-founded a cannabis company in Boulder, CO. As the Chief Science Officer of LucidMood, he created specially formulated cannabis products that deliver distinct and predictable effects. His time in the startup required him to develop expertise in branding, marketing, and public relations. He is published in a variety of media outlets -- from scientific journals to lifestyle magazines -- and has spoken at leading cannabis conferences. Now, Dr. Watkins is a member of OEDIT, where he serves as the Program Manager for the newly established Cannabis Business Office. His goal is to build a program that serves and empowers Colorado communities and may one day be the model in which other states follow.
I grew up in Erie Colorado and graduated from CU Boulder in 2014. I joined the cannabis industry in 2015 as a budtender and worked my way up to the management level in a small dispensary. I then joined LivWell in 2017 as a trimmer and worked my way around the grow and up the chain until I landed on the inventory team and eventually the Security and Compliance team. I made a name for myself by creating audits and sheets with variable functionality from comparing internal inventory and Metrc inventory to detecting fraud and theft through data. I recently joined the Long Play USA team as their compliance manager and I’m excited to be their resource for compliance and beyond. I’m an advocate for data-driven compliance and hope to continue developing myself and Long Play for years to come.
