Berklee EDI’s chair Michael Bierylo, assistant chair Michele Darling, and faculty members, Daedelus, Claire Lim, and Rishabh Rajanwill meet for a panel discussion on their experience in building the EDI principal instrument program at Berklee College, one of the first programs of its kind at a music school within the United States. Topics will include audition requirements, proficiency levels and exams, teaching private lessons, labs and ensembles, and how the program has grown over the past two years. The session will end in Q&A.

Michael Bierylo is an electronic musician, guitarist, composer, and sound designer. He has been a faculty member at Berklee College of Music since 1995 and is currently Chair of the Electronic Production and Design Department where he led the development of Berklee’s Electronic Digital Instrument Program, the Electronic Performance Minor and the Creative Coding Minor. Major projects include artist residencies with Suzanne Ciani, Nona Hendryx, Hank Shocklee, Richard Devine, Chagall, Robert Rich, and Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith. He is also active in Berklee Online, Berklee’s online school, where he authors and teaches music technology courses.
Bierylo has performed throughout the United States as a member of Birdsongs of the Mesozoic. His compositions are featured on the group’s albums Dancing On A’A, Petrophonics, The Iridium Controversy, and Extreme Spirituals, all on Cuneiform Records. As a solo electronic artist, Bierylo has performed with laptop computer and modular synthesizers in the US, Berlin, Shanghai, and Krakow including concerts with Grammy-nominated electronic musician BT and Terrance Blanchard. His composition Koralate appears on The Hundred Dollar Guitar Project CD.As an active member of the Audio Engineering Society he has chaired the Electronic Instrument Design and Applications Track at national conventions, bringing together industry innovators such as Dave Smith and Dave Rossum as well as design teams from Moog, Roland and Korg,
Daedelus (aka Alfred Darlington) is concerned for all things resounding. During a 20+ career synonymous with controllers and Los Angeles' Beat Scene they have performing over 1,000+ shows worldwide, from underground raves to festival mainstages. Producing on labels like Brainfeeder, Ninjatune, Warp, and important upstarts like Albert's Favourites and Dome of Doom. In 2019, just before the world closed, they were founding faculty at the Berklee College of Music's EDI principle instrument program and in 2020 became an artist in residence at S.E.T.I.
Claire Marie Lim is a music technologist and electronic musician who is active under her artist project, dolltr!ck. She specializes in instruction for live electronic performance, production, and programming, and is an advocate of Asian representation and women in music technology.
In music education and arts activism, Lim collaborates with the Girls Rock Campaign, Beats by Girlz, and the Queens Public Library network, and she has received support from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and Queens Council on the Arts. She develops curricula for various ages and experience levels, having consulted for the International Center of Photography, Queens College, Coursera, and the Berklee network. Lim also independently runs the doll troop, a mentorship experience where K–12 girls can shadow her in electronic songwriting sessions and live shows.
Rishabh Rajan is an Assistant Professor in the Electronic Production & Design Department at Berklee College of Music. He has been teaching music production, sound design and electronic music performance in India, Malaysia and United States for over a decade. He has created close to 90 video courses for MacProVideo, culminating in over 8000 hours of educational content. He has also developed courses for Electronic Music Collective, Yousic Play and Berklee Online. His course on Electronic Music Performance Techniques, available on Coursera won a Telly Award in 2020. Rishabh has produced music alongside singer/songwriter Natasha Ejaz that won indie music awards in the South East Asian region. He also works as a sound designer and sample library developer having developed content for Bela D Media, Crypto Cipher & Twisted Tools. Currently Rishabh is a mentor for the Grammy U program by the Recording Academy where he is mentoring students who aspire to build a career in the music industry.
Val Jeanty, also known as Val-Inc, is a Haitian afrofuturist, drummer, turntablist, and professor at Berklee College of Music. Jeanty is a pioneer of the electronic music subgenre called Afro- Electronica (also called "Vodou-Electro") incorporating Haitian Vodou rhythms with digital instrumentations by synergistically combining acoustics with electronics and the archaic with the postmodern. Jeanty’s Afro-Electronica performances include The Whitney Museum, The Museum of Modern Art and internationally at The Venice Biennale in Italy. Jeanty has worked with a diverse group of artists including Geri Allen, Anthony Braxton and SunRa’s drummer Francisco Mora Catlett. She was a 2017 Van Lier fellow, was commissioned by NYSCA for Roulette Intermedium 2019 Residency and she is a 2022 Toulmin/CBA Fellowship recipient.
Michele Darling is the Assistant Chair of the Electronic Production and Design Department at Berklee College of Music. An accomplished sound designer, composer, recording engineer, and educator, she worked for 10 years as part of an Emmy Award–winning production team at Sesame Workshop, where she composed music, worked on sound design, and recorded voice work for Muppets characters. In addition, her career highlights include sound work for several animated television shows, such as Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh!, as well as online media and video games and electronic music performance. She has been a member of the Ableton sound design team, making Ableton Live sound presets for multi genre music producers worldwide for Live 10. Michele has been performing electronic music since 2004, under the monikers Aerostatic, Girls Like Bass, and more recently m.darling, playing a combination of experimental sounds, microbeats and macrobeats with a house music influence.
