Cary Hatch

With more than 35 years of experience in advertising and marketing communications, Cary Hatch, CEO of MDB Communications, has established a formidable track-record in business and consumer communications, both domestic and international. Her broad-based client experience includes National Geographic, Roy Rogers Restaurants, Fannie Mae, Chevy Chase Trust, Sprint, the DC Lottery and many others.

Cary Hatch has been recognized by the Washington Business Journal, on their POWER 100 list, as one of the region’s most influential business leaders. She currently serves on the Government Relations Committee for the American Association of Advertising Agencies and is the Chairman of the Mid-Atlantic Board of Governors for the 4A’s. In December of 2018, she was appointed to the National Advertising Review Board. Additionally, Hatch is a trustee of the Federal City Council, a board member of the Greater Washington Board of Trade and the ($1.7B) University System of Maryland Foundation. Other recent board appointments include Year Up (NCR) and the Historical Society of Washington, DC. Cary is also a member of the Economic Club of Washington, DC.

Cary has also served on the boards of the International Women's Forum (Washington, DC) and Leadership Greater Washington, as well as serving on the Executive Committee of The Greater Washington Board of Trade. A member of the 2012 class of The Leadership Foundry, Cary has completed the National Association of Corporate Directors Professionalism Program.

She is a noted lecturer at Johns Hopkins, Georgetown University, George Washington University, and the University of Maryland (her alma mater). Cary is a regular on TV and radio outlets commenting on branding, advertising and marketing communications trends and cultural impact.

Client work has appeared both nationally and internationally in Graphis, Print, and Communication Arts. Creative recognition includes numerous, London International Awards, Tellys, Silver Microphones, and ADDYs as well as MAXI Awards for excellence in direct marketing.

A native Washingtonian, Cary Hatch joined MDB in 1981 as an account executive. After her promotion into a management position in 1983, and growing the business for several years, she purchased the company in 1987. MDB was recognized as an Inc. 500 company in 1996.

David M. Nellis is a strategic brand marketing professional with more than 40 years’ experience and success both in-house as a chief marketing officer and as an agency owner. He currently is a principal of Return On Investment, Inc. (ROI; www.roiadvertising.com).

Founded in 1996, ROI is one of the leading, strategic marcom agencies headquartered in the Greater Washington marketplace. ROI has served and serves a broad range of local, regional, national and international clients across a spectrum of industry arenas, from hospitality and retail to defense, life sciences, major municipalities, automotive, telecom, commercial and residential real estate and more with a full range of in-house digital and traditional marketing capabilities.

Prior to opening his own agency, David spent many years as a senior retail marketing and sales promotion executive, first with Hecht’s as vice president, public relations and public affairs and then with the Raleigh’s/Garfinckel’s specialty retail chain as vice president, sales promotion and PR.

David also is a published Civil War historian and co-host of the DC area’s top-rated restaurant industry variety show, Foodie and the Beast, now in its 12th year and broadcasting live every Sunday at 11:00 a.m. on 1500 AM.

Steve Winter

Steve Winter brings to this panel more than 40 years of industry experience and an entrepreneurial spirit honed from years of running his own agencies – first Winter•Fried Communications, later Brotman•Winter•Fried (BWF) which is now a division of Sage Communications, for which he jointly serves as a Senior Vice President. Along the way, he developed expertise in various communication disciplines including journalism, media relations, community outreach, special event management and promotion, grassroots marketing, creative design and production, audio and video direction, media buying and placement and social media. His subject matter expertise ranges from sports and entertainment, restaurants, retail and consumer shows to technology clients, new product launches, even local and federal government agencies. A member of various charity boards, chambers of commerce and local networking groupsand an Adjunct Professor of Public Relations at Georgetown University, Steve is a graduate of American University with a degree in journalism.
