Lorelei started this company with $400, a laptop, and a dream! She has helped hundreds of entrepreneurs grow their businesses across the United States. Being a small business owner herself she understands the growing pains of developing a business, which is why she believes that her company, WNC Social Media Buzz, succeeds when you succeed.

John Hornsby
Hornsby Creative, Experiential Designer, #FBWAVL Organizer

About the Organizer:

John Hornsby is the Founder and Chief Creative Director of Hornsby Creative. Throughout his 25 year career, he has served in leadership for various creative companies. He has rarely held a traditional job, always finding his way into unique situations. These have included running a DIY performance space, playing in bands while running the art department for a special events company, driving an RV around the country marketing Medicare with his wife, managing multiple signs and graphics companies. 

John is also a founding board member of AIGA Asheville, the professional association for design, and is part of the team for CreativeMornings Asheville. 

Most recently, he and his wife launched Connection Kits, a service that curates mailed kits that bring the tactile connection back into the world of virtual events. John is also the lead organizer for Freelance Business Week Asheville. 

You can join John and fellow speaker Gabe Swinney at a once-in-a-lifetime creative retreat to Spain this summer.

Session description:

Sometimes you don’t have the budget to hire a professional designer for every project. But you can invest in learning to up your own DIY design skills. A strategy-first approach to well-executed design principles is proven to drive more engagement and conversions. In this workshop, John will share the top DIY design mistakes he’s seen over the past 25 years in experience design and how to avoid them. 

We’ll touch on some of the free and low-cost DIY design solutions out there and more importantly how best to use them to get results. We’ll explore real-world examples of the best and the worst designs. Be prepared to walk away empowered to better position and market your offerings with effective design.

About the speaker:

Ashley Swanger is the Small Business Center (SBC) Director at Haywood Community College.  Ashley is a WNC native with a passion for putting her business operations, and strategy experience to work developing people and supporting small businesses.  She holds an MBA and has over 20 years of experience in business management, operations, and supply chain in industries from medical device manufacturing to craft brewing.  Ashley has served as an advisor and mentor to Entrepreneurs and Small Business Owners in WNC since 2017.

About the speaker:

Shannon Quinn is the Director of Marketing & Communications for Lake Junaluska Conference & Retreat Center. She has worked in marketing and public relations for companies such as Earth Fare and Chimney Rock State Park, as an editor for Lark Books, and as a freelance content writer and marketing consultant for small businesses and nonprofit organizations. She is the mother of an incredibly artistic teenage daughter, whom she often consults for visual advice for both business and clothing choices. The clothing choices almost never pass muster.
