How can we make innovation more inclusive with Startup Edmonton


Jacquelyn Cardinal is a sakāwithiniwak (Woodland Cree) entrepreneur and Indigenous technologist from the Sucker Creek Cree First Nation in northern Alberta. As managing director at Naheyawin, an agency based in Edmonton, Alberta, Jacquelyn works to integrate and mobilize diverse knowledge systems to realize our treaties' promise. She has received an Esquao Award for Achievement in Business and a SHEInnovates Award from the UN Women's Global Innovation Coalition for Change for her ongoing entrepreneurial pursuits. As an artist, she has received the 2019 Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Award for Outstanding New Play given to Lake of the Strangers, her first play co-written with her brother.  

Simran Dhillon is a student exploring facets of advocacy, community engagement, research, and innovation. Simran’s experience utilizing her advocacy and passion for innovation and entrepreneurship has placed her on public platforms including a conference held at the United Nations headquarters in New York, TEDx, and an invitation to the 2020 Peace Summit at the UN centre in Thailand. She has an immense passion for solving international issues plaguing the world in facets of healthcare and inequity of fundamental supports.Simran has founded two non-profit organizations that continue to serve and reduce inequity found within her community and amplify the voices of minorities. She has also utilized this passion for entrepreneurship in various fields of research to progress innovation within the healthcare industry; including her research in innovating solutions to address Street-level Opioid Overdoses and telerehabilitation during COVID19, and others. Some of her awards and recognitions include the Telus Innovation Challenge and Top 30 Under 30. She has been featured in Globe and Mail, CBC, Global News, and the Edmonton Journal.

Keren Tang is a community organizer, a social innovator, a political candidate in the Edmonton municipal election, and an avid Angel investor in the Edmonton startup community. She has previously worked on social innovation projects to develop peer-to-peer, neighbour-neighbour networks with the City of Edmonton and with the McConnell Foundation. She got her in start Angel Investing locally as a member of Valhalla Angels where she developed an investment thesis focused on using private capital for positive social impact after an investment in a South Sudanese startup. She has participated in every Startup TNT Investment Summit and is a proud investor in 12 Edmonton startups.  

Skye Kihara

Skye Kihara’s innovation ethos and professional philosophy is to lead with community in mind. She is dedicated to helping startup focused organizations succeed through optimal operations, community development, and innovative program implementation. 

Skye’s passion is to be the catalyst for explosive solutions by connecting ideas and those behind them with resources to launch their next best startup solution. 

Prior to joining BBVA, she helped lead community development at Startup Edmonton, where she launched the first Foundations for Black Founders, after organizing, listening, and learning from Black and BIPOC tech expert roundtables. She is excited to contribute to an ever-changing, ever-growing tech ecosystem - helping to usher in more ideas and diverse founders into the tech ecosystem. Skye is looking forward to contributing to the cultivation of a deeply interconnected technology world.


How can we ensure underrepresented potential founders pursue entrepreneurship? The question of what prevents these potential founders from succeeding as entrepreneurs is of vital importance to not only the innovation ecosystem but our economy and society as a whole.
