Suzanne Kane counsels clients on U.S. laws and policies affecting international trade and business, including customs and import control laws. Suzanne’s experience covers a wide range of commercial and enforcement laws, including: duty preference programs, Section 232 and Section 301 tariffs, antidumping and countervailing duty orders, Enforce and Protect Act investigations, intellectual property rights enforcement, country of origin marking, Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism, fraud and strategic investigations, civil and criminal penalties and binding rulings.

Prior to joining Akin Gump, Suzanne served for more than six years as senior attorney-advisor at U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Suzanne played a key role in the administration of CBP’s enforcement of Inter Partes Review (IPR) at U.S. borders. She drafted and issued agency decisions regarding seizures of merchandise infringing trademarks and copyrights and International Trade Commission patent exclusions orders. She also conducted IPR enforcement training for CBP officers at various U.S. ports of entry.

Suzanne is experienced in CBP’s enforcement of consumer product safety laws. In 2009, the Commissioner of CBP awarded her the Commissioner’s Award for her role in drafting the Importer Self-Assessment Product Safety Pilot Program, a trade partnership program jointly administered by CBP and the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The Honorable Philip D. Moeller is Executive Vice President, Business

Operations Group and Regulatory Affairs at the Edison Electric Institute

(EEI). EEI is the association that represents all of the nation’s investor-

owned electric companies.

Mr. Moeller has significant responsibility over a broad range of issues

that affect the future structure of the electric power industry and new

rules in evolving competitive markets. He has responsibility over the

strategic areas of energy supply and finance, environment, energy

delivery, energy services, federal and state regulatory issues, and

international affairs.

EEI’s member companies increasingly are focused on delivering

innovative solutions that meet customers’ changing expectations. Mr.

Moeller works with EEI’s member companies to identify policy solutions

and business opportunities to better serve customers.

Prior to joining EEI in February 2016, Mr. Moeller served as a

Commissioner on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC),

ending his tenure as the second-longest serving member of the

Commission. In office from 2006 through 2015, Mr. Moeller ended his

service as the only Senate-confirmed member of the federal government

appointed by both President George W. Bush and President Barack

Obama. At FERC, Mr. Moeller championed policies promoting improved

wholesale electricity markets, increasing investment in electric

transmission and natural gas pipeline infrastructure, and enhancing the

coordination of the electric power and natural gas industries.

Earlier in his career, Mr. Moeller headed the Washington, D.C., office of

Alliant Energy Corporation. He also served as a Senior Legislative

Assistant for Energy Policy to U.S. Senator Slade Gorton (R-WA), and as

the Staff Coordinator of the Washington State Senate Energy and

Telecommunications Committee in Olympia, Washington.

Mr. Moeller was born in Chicago and raised on a ranch near Spokane,

Washington. He received a BA in Political Science from Stanford

University.

Alejandro Moreno is the Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Renewable Power at the U.S. Department of Energy. He previously was the Director for the Department's Water Power Technologies Office, where he is responsible for the Department’s R&D portfolio for hydropower and marine renewable energy. Working with the DOE national laboratories, universities and industry, his team designs and funds innovative science and technologies to support renewable energy generation, power system reliability, and both freshwater and marine ecosystems. Between his stints at DOE, he served in the energy groups of the World Bank and International Finance Corporation, where he designed and led regulatory reform programs to spur investment in clean energy and rural electrification.

Mr. Moreno holds a Bachelor’s degree from Stanford University and a Master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies.
