Hip-Hop Writing and Black Awareness

Toki Wright is the Chair of Professional Music at Berklee College of Music. MC, producer, writer, radio host, and arts diplomat, Toki is a 2x Emmy Award Winner with PBS (6x nominee) and a 6x Twin Cities Hip-Hop Award winner. Toki co-curated the 2x CLIO Award-winning and Cannes Lion-nominated Watch The Stove mixtape for Hamburger Helper/General Mills (named the biggest viral marketing campaign of the year), and has charted in the top 50 on MTV and iTunes with performances at Coachella, Rock the Bells, and more.

Join this session to explore how Black identity is passed down through songwriting and poetry in Hip-Hop music. Participants will examine language, tradition, and colloquialisms unique to Black writers.
